General


Oryctes has a maximum operating altitude of 50 m from ground surface, and 2 km above mean sea level. Do note that maximum payload capacity of the drone is reduced when flying at high altitudes above sea level.

The maximum communication distance is 2 km when measured at regular operation altitudes.

The maximum flight speed is 5 m/s while the optimum operational flight speed is 3 m/s.

Oryctes can hover for 22 minutes with an empty load (19.5kg) and for 10 minutes when fully loaded (35.5 kg).

Oryctes Mist can only perform blanket spraying while Oryctes Dual can perform both spot spraying and blanket spraying.

In blanket spraying mode, Oryctes Mist & Dual can spray up to 3 hectares per hour.

In spot spraying mode, Oryctes Dual can spray up to 2 hectares per hour.

On average, a unit of Oryctes covers 3-4 missions per hour.

Yes. Within approximately five minutes, Oryctes can be folded to 40% of its original size for transport and storage (folded dimensions: 1073 x 956 x 546 mm).

Oryctes’s core module has a protection rating against dust and moisture of IP65. This means it is totally protected against dust and is protected against low-pressure jets of water from all directions. However, the protection rating may reduce over time due to wear and tear. Note that this IP rating does not extend to the Oryctes LiPo battery.

We do not recommend operating Oryctes in rainy or stormy weather.

No. Oryctes does not required any assembly. Once unfolded and activated, it is ready for operation.

Battery

Oryctes drone batteries take approximately 1 hour for a full charge using the Oryctes battery charger. Note that recently used batteries need to be left to cool down for 15 minutes before charging can begin.

The remote controller charging time is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.

The RTK base unit battery charging time is approximately 3 hours.

On average, an Oryctes battery unit can last for 250-300 cycles which is equivalent to 250-300 flights.

A fully charged Oryctes battery supports on average 15 minutes of flight time during normal operation.

The remote controller battery lasts on average 25 hours per charge.

The remote controller battery lasts on average 25 hours per charge.

Battery levels may drain faster at lower temperatures and when the drone is flying in turbulent conditions.

All our battery chargers operate on an input voltage of 200 - 240 V.

Yes. Once connected to a power source, Oryctes will power on automatically and start the initialization process. For detailed instructions, refer to the Oryctes User Manual.


Spraying System

The spray tank can hold up to 16 L of liquid. The tank is specifically designed for easy access and fast liquid refill.

In blanket spraying mode, the flow rate of each of the four nozzles is 10 ml/s. The spraying width is 4 - 6 m.

In spot spraying mode, the flow rate is variable between 50 – 150 ml/s and can be customized based on your needs.

In blanket spraying mode, a unit of Oryctes can spray up to 24 hectares per day while a knapsack mist-blower can cover up to 12.5 hectares per day.

In spot spraying mode (for oil palm), a unit of Oryctes can spray up to 16 hectares per day while a manual knapsack sprayer can cover between 2-3 hectares per day.

When blanket spraying using Oryctes Mist, the operating pump pressure is 0.48 MPa.

When spot spraying using Oryctes Dual, the operating pump pressure is 0.8 MPa.

It is recommended to maintain 1.5 – 3 m height above the crops.

According to our white paper study, Oryctes Dual spraying achieved an average of 97% accuracy operating under normal weather conditions.

While Oryctes Dual uses RTK positioning to pinpoint locations with centimetre-level accuracy, keep in mind that actual spray accuracy can be affected by external factors such as strong winds and inaccuracies during setup and mapping. To reduce the effect of these factors, we train clients on best practices for Oryctes operation.

The RTK base unit acts as a reference point to improve positioning accuracy. With the help of an RTK base unit, Oryctes Dual can spray accurately within ± 1 cm.

Most liquid pesticides are compatible with Oryctes. If you are using powder, ensure that it is fully dissolved in water before pouring into the spray tank.


Features

Three high-precision microwave radars are placed on the front slope, bottom, and the back of the drone. Front and back radars detect forthcoming obstacles during missions as a safety feature. Using its downward radar, Oryctes can automatically adjust its altitude according to terrain to maintain consistent height above crops during spraying.

The obstacle avoidance sequence will only be triggered when the obstacle is within a 2 m range.

When triggered, the drone halts and hovers at a safe distance away from the detected obstacle. You can switch to Manual mode to manually navigate past the obstacle, and resume operation in Auto mode.

The obstacle avoidance function is a safety feature that is automatically activated when Oryctes is powered.

Yes. Oryctes is equipped with a static forward-facing camera. The camera provides a live video feed via the Oryctes Flight App during flight operations.

By providing a clear video feed, the FPV camera helps you to avoid obstacles while piloting the drone, and aids in recording waypoints and A-B mode points.

No. The live video feeds are only displayed in real time and cannot be saved.


Airamap

Airamap is an advanced aerial mapping analytics software equipped with an artificial intelligence (AI) data processing engine. Airamap integrates with the Oryctes Flight App to provide mapping analysis and tree identification required for path planning. Using Airamap’s team management functions, flight missions can be planned and assigned to different Oryctes pilots using the software interface.

We recommend using the DJI Phantom series or DJI Mavic series for high-resolution mapping of plantations and farmland.

Airamap is free-to-use for clients using it with their Oryctes drone operations. Other services may incur charges according to Airamap’s pricing structure.

For Oryctes users, Airamap provides unlimited storage for Oryctes flight information.

For regular Airamap users, the data storage capacity is 6GB for Basic accounts and 100GB for Pro accounts. Any data stored on Airamap can be downloaded and removed to free up storage capacity.

Any format is accepted as long as it contains the EXIF information required.

As of this moment, no. For security and quality assurance purposes, we use Airamap to connect securely to Oryctes for all flight data transmission.


Oryctes Flight App

The Oryctes Flight App is a companion app for the Oryctes drone. Using the app, you can easily monitor the drone’s location, telemetry data, and view a video feed in real-time from your remote controller, in addition to accessing a range of flight functions.

The Oryctes Flight App is complimentary with every purchase of the Oryctes Ready-to-Fly package. The app is preloaded onto the Android phone provided.

The Oryctes Flight App is currently not available for download. It is preloaded on the Android phone provided with every purchase of the Oryctes Ready-to-Fly package.

Mission progress is saved in the Oryctes Flight App. In the event of an interruption, you can choose to resume from the last saved waypoint or restart the mission.

The Oryctes Flight App displays the current battery of the drone, in addition to flight parameters in real time such as vertical speed, horizontal speed, height above ground and distance from launch point.


Operation

It is recommended to keep a safe distance of at least 10 m from the drone during takeoff and landing.

In A-B mode, Oryctes flies automatically in a zigzag pattern using point A and point B as references for turning points.

  1. Prepare the drone for flight.
  2. Using loiter mode, take off and navigate to a starting point A.
  3. In the flight app, select A-B mode and save point A using the controller.
  4. Navigate to turning point B and save it using the controller.
  5. Start the A-B mode mission by toggling to A-B mode on the controller.

Manual mode provides the most control over your drone but will require continuous input from the pilot during the mission.

  1. Prepare the drone for flight.
  2. Switch the pump mode to Manual and the flight mode to Loiter.
  3. Take off with the drone and navigate to your selected location.
  4. On your controller, press the spray button once to start spraying, and once more to stop.

  1. Ensure the mission files are downloaded from Airamap onto your Android phone.
  2. Next, prepare the drone for flight.
  3. Using the Oryctes Flight App, upload the mission file to the drone.
  4. In the app, switch the pump mode to Auto and the flight mode to Loiter.
  5. Take off with the drone.
  6. Switch the flight mode to Auto and the drone will begin the uploaded flight mission automatically.

We recommend 2 staff when operating a single drone, or 3 staff when operating 2 drones at the same time.

Once the drone is airborne and set to Auto mode, no further human input is required until it is time to land. However, you should always maintain a visual line of sight with the drone for safety purposes and be ready to take over control if required.

We do not recommend flying Oryctes at night as it would be near-impossible to orientate the drone correctly. For safety purposes, you should always have a clear line of sight with the drone.

Oryctes is designed for outdoor use only. Never attempt to fly indoors as poor GPS signal strength can cause severe drone instability. As the pilot, you are wholly responsible for the safety of those around you when operating a drone.

Do not operate Oryctes in rainy or stormy weather as rain interferes with the obstacle avoidance system and greatly affects flight safety. Strong winds may also destabilise the drone during flight.

Do not operate Oryctes in winds which exceed 8 m/s as it would greatly affect stability and safety of the drone. Flying in strong winds drains the battery faster as the drone will consume more power to stabilize during flight.

The remote controller will automatically pair with the drone when both are powered on and within range. Note that each remote controller can only be assigned to a single drone at a time. For detailed instructions, view the Oryctes User Manual.

Yes, you can use Oryctes for any agriculture spraying application as long there is enough clearance. Ensure that you do not exceed the maximum flight height of 50 m and do not operate indoors.

We provide complimentary staff training with every purchase of the Oryctes Ready-to-Fly package for up to 4 staff members. Extra costs may apply for additional staff training.

Warranty & Care

The coverage of the complimentary warranty is listed in the table below. Damage due to water damage, self-modification, pilot error or improper usage of the drone will not be covered.

If we are unable to repair your drone within the same day, we will provide you a temporary replacement unit to avoid disruption in your operations while we retain your drone for repairs.

Yes. We offer an Oryctes Care package, which extends your warranty by two (2) additional years.

Oryctes Care provides two additional years of warranty protection on top of the one-year basic warranty. Subscribers to Oryctes Care also receive six (6) rounds of drone maintenance servicing free-of-charge. The servicing will be carried out every six hundred (600) hours or every four (4) months of operation, whichever comes first. The pricing and coverage of Oryctes Care are listed in the table below.

It is recommended to send the drone for a routine maintenance every 600 flight hours or every 4 months, whichever comes first. You should also send your drone in for maintenance if you notice any significant damage during your regular checks.

You should check your drone once every day that it is in operation.

Before flying, check for any loose screws and tighten them. Inspect the exterior of the drone for any visible damage visually and by running your hands over the surfaces, watching out for hairline cracks. Also inspect the condition of the propellers for damage or wear-and-tear; replace them if necessary.

Every purchase of Oryctes comes with a complimentary 1-year warranty. For more information, see the Warranty section.

First, empty the tank of all residual liquid using the manual spray function on the remote controller. Fill the tank with clean water and let it soak as needed, before draining the water again using the manual spray function.

To prepare Oryctes for storage, completely empty the spray tank and pipes of all liquid, and rinse the spray system with clean water. Carefully fold the airframe and secure the propellers for storage using the foam protectors. Ensure that all LiPo batteries are discharged properly and placed in a fireproof container for storage.

Miscellaneous

Oryctes meets all the legal requirements to operate within Malaysia’s airspace. However, in line with Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) regulations, commercial drone operators will need to seek the necessary approval before starting a mission. Yes. Oryctes is SIRIM-certified for operation in Malaysia (HIDF18000056) and is built with up-to-date drone safety features, including a front, downward, back-facing obstacle avoidance system and multiple redundancies.

Oryctes is proudly designed and developed in Malaysia. We source parts from reputable local and international suppliers, and assemble units locally at our workshop in Cyberjaya, Malaysia.

The Oryctes drone (pronounced aw-RICK-tus) is named after a common damaging oil palm pest, the rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes Rhinoceros), also known as kumbang tanduk.
